Tourists are flocking to catch a glimpse of a stunning spot dubbed the 'Little Blue Lake' in Tasmania, just two hours from Launceston in the north east of the state.

The spectacular destination is nestled just eight kilometres from the towns of Gladstone and Derby and metres from the road.

It was originally a mine hole before it was filled with water and turned into a lake.  

The lake gets its bright blue colour from the high levels of aluminium found in its base, which result from the pioneering mining days of South Mount Cameron in the 1880s.

But while it looks tempting for a dip, swimming is not recommended due to the high mineral content in the water.

Instead, the shores can be used for walks, photographs, camping, barbecues and picnics.

The area is also popular for gem hunters, with smokey quartz, amethyst, and topaz all found in the region.

Visitors to the area can park at the lookout, before making the short walk to the Little Blue Lake.

Keen hikers can also enjoy the well signposted Cube Rock Walk which starts at the lake carpark and covers three and a half hours of bushland, rocks and orchids.

Stunning photos snapped by visitors show the contrasting brilliant blue colour of the lake with the surrounding rock.

Many who have visited highlight that there is no internet reception at the Little Blue Lake and surrounding areas, so it is a good idea to have a map downloaded to your phone before you visit.

The Little Blue Lake has an impressive 4.5 star rating on Tripadvisor, where travellers have described it as a 'hidden gem', 'paradise' and 'the perfect spot'.

One recent reviewer wrote: 'Little Blue Lake is so beautiful that one must visit if you are visiting Tasmania. It's a must for nature lovers and nature photographers'.

Another added: 'The water is breathtaking and it looks even better than the pictures. It's very easy to walk around and take photos from all sorts of angles'.
