They were massive underdogs going into the 2020 series but Queensland are the current holders of the State of Origin shield.

Rugby league's fiercest rivalry will be back in 2021, returning to a more familiar format and timeslot.

Here's everything you need to know about State of Origin 2021.

When and where is the 2021 State of Origin?

The COVID-enforced season-ending, back-to-back-to-back Origin series has unsurprisingly been scrapped for this year.

Origin will return to the middle of the NRL season with two and a half weeks between each game.

Games I and III will be midweek fixtures, while Game II will be on a Sunday on a standalone weekend.

The Suncorp Stadium decider proved pivotal in 2020 as the Maroons held on for a historic win, with the home-ground advantage in Game III in New South Wales' favour this time around.

Representative rugby league is returning to Melbourne with Game I of the 2021 series confirmed for the MCG.

"We're excited to be taking Australia's biggest sporting brand to Melbourne for the 10th time," he said.

"The last year has been incredibly challenging for Victorians with the extended lockdowns and challenges. We're delighted to be bringing Ampol State of Origin back to the city. It will give fans an exceptional live sports experience, and bring interstate visitors back to the hotels and restaurants."

Game I

Wednesday, June 9 - Melbourne Cricket Ground, VIC

Game II

Sunday, June 27 - Suncorp Stadium, QLD

Game III

Wednesday, July 14 - Stadium Australia, NSW

How to watch State of Origin 2021

If you can't make it the game, Channel Nine will have you covered.

As always, the free-to-air broadcaster will have exclusive rights to the live coverage of the series.

Replays will be available on Fox League immediately following the games.

State of Origin 2021 squads

Queensland pulled off an against-the-odds series win in 2020 to ensure confidence will be high in the camp heading into this year's edition.

They'll be looking to repeat the feat without master coach Wayne Bennett, who was drafted in as a late replacement when Kevin Walters took the Broncos job.

Bennett has since relinquished the role, seeing Cowboys premiership-winning coach Paul Green appointed as coach.

The Blues will again be led by Brad Fittler, who experienced his first series loss as a coach last year, having claimed wins in 2018 and 2019.

Squads for Game I will be announced following the conclusion of round 11 of the NRL, most likely on May 31.

Take a look at the squads for 2020 here.
