Richmond Tigers great Royce Hart has been hospitalised following a car crash in Hobart on Sunday.

Hart was involved in a head-on collision on the East Derwent Highway, as first reported by 7News.

Tasmania Police confirmed in a statement that Hart and the passenger in his vehicle were taken to hospital with "non life threatening" injuries.

"A red Hyundai hatch travelling north on the Huon Highway collided head on with a silver Nissan X-Trail which was travelling south on the Huon Highway," the statement read.

"The driver and sole occupant of the Hyundai, a 77-year-old woman from Mountain River, had to be cut free from her vehicle and was transported to the Royal Hobart Hospital with serious injuries.

"The Huon Highway was closed for about four hours while the scene was cleared."

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
