Prince Harry has alluded to the difficulties his mother faced in dealing with the press and the royal family "by herself", saying he was "relieved" to be sharing the experience with "my wife by my side".

His comments are shown in a teaser clip of an interview with Oprah Winfrey, the second snippet to be released ahead of next week's broadcast.

"For me, I'm just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you, with my wife by my side," the Duke of Sussex tells Oprah.

"Because I can't begin to imagine what it must have been like for her [Diana, Princess of Wales] going through this process by herself, all those years ago, because it has been unbelievably tough for the two of us, but at least we have each other."

The Duchess of Sussex is seated next to her husband, clutching his hand.

A photo of Diana holding Prince Harry as a toddler is included in the short clip.

Princess Diana's relationship with the media is well documented, concluding with her death during a car crash while being pursued by the paparazzi in Paris in 1997.

A year before, the Princess of Wales had to deal with the fallout of her divorce from Prince Charles, including having to relinquish the title of Her Royal Highness, in August 1996. They had announced their separation in 1992.

Harry and Meghan, too, have now stopped using their His/Her Royal Highness titles, following an agreement reached with Queen Elizabeth II and Buckingham Palace.

Diana became known as Diana, Princess of Wales following her divorce. Harry and Meghan are still allowed to be called the Duke and Duchess of Sussex under the deal, but cannot use the term 'royal' in their charitable endeavour, Archewell, or in any of their new business dealings.

In another section of the interview, released separately today, Harry says, "My biggest concern was history repeating itself", echoing comments he's previously made comparing media scrutiny of his wife to what his mother Princess Diana endured before her death in 1997.

"You've said some pretty shocking things here..." Oprah tells the couple as the preview concludes.

In the two clips released so far, Meghan is seen touching her growing belly - she is thought to be around five months pregnant with her second child - and is wearing a dress by Giorgio Armarni and necklace by Pippa Small. On her wrists are several bracelets including her Cartier Love bangle, popular with many women including Denmark's Crown Princess Mary.

The interview was filmed at the Sussexes' home in Montecito, the same Santa Barbara neighbourhood Oprah lives in.

Billed by TV network CBS as an "intimate conversation", it will air on Sunday March 7 in the US. It has been extended from 90 minutes to two hours.

In a statement, CBS explained the special would begin with a "wide-ranging" conversation between Oprah and the duchess.
