Co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler used their Golden Globes monologue to take a swipe at the lack of diversity among the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's (HFPA) membership.
The two comedians hosted Sunday's annual awards ceremony from two separate coasts - New York and California - due to the coronavirus pandemic.
During their opening remarks, "30 Rock's" Fey and "Parks and Recreation's" Poehler referenced a recent Los Angeles Times report that revealed that the HFPA has had no Black members in two decades.
The group, Fey cracked, is "made up of around 90 international, no Black journalists who attend movie junkets each year in search of a better life."
Several high-profile entertainers, including "Selma" director Ava DuVernay, Kerry Washington, Olivia Wilde, and Shonda Rhimes, had signed a statement calling for increased identity within the 87-member body.
The HFPA had previously pledged to improve its diversity, saying the issue would also be addressed in Sunday's awards show.
"Everybody is understandably upset at the HFPA and their choices," Poehler told the Globes audience, made up of first responders and essential workers. "Look, a lot of flashy garbage got nominated, but that happens. That's like their thing. But a number of Black actors and Black-led projects were overlooked."
"We all know that awards shows are stupid," Fey chimed in.
"The point is, even the stupid things, inclusivity is important," she continued. "And there are no Black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press."
"I realize, HFPA, maybe you guys didn't get the memo because your workplace is the back booth of a French McDonald's," Fey quipped.
"You gotta change that. So here's to changing it," she said to applause.
"Yes, I'm looking forward to that change," said Poehler.
