Campsites can't reopen until May due to shared loos - but rule doesn't apply to pubs

Campsites across England have been left fuming and devastated as a rule on shared toilets means the majority won't be able to reopen until May.

The lockdown roadmap announced by Boris Johnson means that self-contained accommodation will be able to reopen from April 12, which many holidaymakers took to mean camping holidays could be back on the cards.

However, any accommodation which includes shared indoor facilities - for example toilet blocks or shower blocks - won't be allowed to reopen on this date.

Instead, they will need to wait until at least May 17 when all other accommodation will be able to open, meaning they will miss out on the peak season of the first May bank holiday weekend.

Some have also pointed out that under the April 12 reopening rules, pubs and restaurants with outdoor areas can reopen, and the government guidance says that "these venues may allow customers to use toilets located inside".

Martin Smith, founder of Campsites.co.uk, says: "Under the current roadmap, pubs and shops can open their toilet facilities for customers from April 12, but campsites must keep theirs closed until May 17.

"This matters, because it stops thousands of campsites opening for the early Bank Holiday weekend, depriving independent sites the chance to claw back some of the revenue they have lost from missing successive Easters and all of spring 2020.

"We want the Government to reconsider their decision and level the playing field for campsites. If toilets are okay for pubs and shops, there's no sane reason they can't be opened at campsites too."

Meanwhile Dan Yates, founder of booking platform Pitchup.com, points out that for some of the more budget-friendly sites, the toilet blocks are the only shared facilities available at all.

He said: "We've been talking to a number of site-owners who offer relatively basic provision, with shared loos only, about the unfairness of campsites being unable to open at the same time that other outdoor venues and attractions (that also offer similar shared loos).

"Again there seems to be a lack of parity in the application of rules across sectors, as well as an overall lack of clarity - unhelpful for customers and businesses alike."
