Motorists in Argentina were shocked to discover a swarm of mosquitos had created a terrifying tornado-like formation high into the sky.

Video footage recorded yesterday by a driver on Route 74 between General Madariaga and Pinamar in Argentina shows a huge dark tower looming in the sky further up the road from the motorist.

The enormous tower-like shape appears to stand hundreds of feet tall, but upon closer inspection, the entire structure is made up of mosquitoes.

In the video footage, the shocked motorist can be heard saying: 'It's getting bigger and bigger, I've never seen anything like this before.'

The sighting of the bizarre twister-like formation comes after the Buenos Aires region of Argentina was invaded by mosquitoes.

Juan Jose Garcia, a researcher at the Centre for Parasitological and Vector Studies (CEPAVE) told local media: 'Heavy rains caused flooding resulting in large pools of stagnant water where female mosquitoes lay their eggs.'

He added that this often results in the birth of 'huge numbers' of insects which 'invade cities'.

Despite the enormous number of insects, Garcia said that they do not pose a threat to humans but do have the potential to interfere with farming activities.

As such, he said that no action was necessary to deal with the large numbers of insects, and instead people should just see out the next 15 days.

After this time period, the insects should begin to die off.

Despite Garcia's advice, many locals have called on the authorities to fumigate the flying pests.

The Directorate of Zoonosis of the municipality of Pinamar responded to the requests, claiming that fumigation would be ineffective as it would only kill a tiny fraction of the mosquito population in the area.

A directorate spokesperson said: 'Fumigation brings with it the risk of introducing toxic chemicals into the food chain which will have a knock-on effect towards the insect's natural predators.'

Due to these environmental concerns, the municipality says it 'reserves fumigation for extreme cases where there is a real threat to the general public health'.

Locals are being encouraged to use insect repellent, ensure their windows have good-quality mosquito nets, and to keep water sources covered when they aren't in use.
