Joe Biden has posed with the two first dogs in the Oval Office saying the two German Shepherds have 'walk-in privileges'. 

The president tweeted the sweet image alongside Major and Champ, writing: 'Not many people have Oval Office walk-in privileges. 

'Happy to report that these two are on the list.'  

First dogs Champ and Major are reviving a tradition that goes back to George Washington - the first President to have a dog - after four years of a dog-free White House under the leadership of former President Donald Trump.

He was the first US leader in decades not to have a canine companion.

Champ, who was named by Biden's granddaughters, has already enjoyed eight years of D.C. life, having lived with Joe and Jill at the vice presidential residence at the U.S. Naval Observatory during Obama's presidency. 

The Bidens adopted their second dog Major from a shelter in Delaware in 2018.

He burst onto the national scene late last year after Mr Biden, then president-elect, broke his right foot while playing with the dog at their home in Wilmington, Delaware. 

The dog then went on to make history this year when he became the first-ever rescue dog to take up residence in the White House - a moment that was captured in several sweet snaps shared by the first couple.

According to a White House spokesperson, Champ - who was purchased from a breeder in Pennsylvania in 2008 while Biden was serving as Vice President - and Major have quickly settled into their first dog lifestyles.

When the first images of the pets at the White House were shared, it was revealed that Champ had been spending most of his time in his bed in front of the fire, while Major was doing laps around the South Lawn. 

The two German Shepherds were heard barking outside of Biden's Oval Office window shortly after their arrival, just as he finished signing an executive order to overturn the military's transgender ban. 

A C-Span clip shared on Twitter featured the two pups barking in the background while the President put down his pen, and an aide escorted the White House press corps outside.

Twitter users were quick to joke about the 'chatty' canines, with one person suggesting that the dogs were trying to tell the media that it was 'time to go'. 

First lady Jill had enlisted the help of the couple's pets to help encourage Americans to mask up amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in a new PSA.

In the clip - which was filmed at the White House and aired during the 17th annual Puppy Bowl on Sunday - the 69-year-old professor urged her fellow pet owners to protect themselves against COVID-19 by wearing a face covering.

'The unconditional love from a dog is one of the most beautiful things on earth - and we owe it to them to keep ourselves healthy,' she says, while glancing down at her dogs. 'So please keep wearing your mask, even when you're out walking your dog.'

The dogs also played a role in Biden's official campaign; the 78-year-old urged his supporters to help him 'bring dogs back to the White House', while sharing an image of himself posing with Champ.  

The Bidens are also understood to be planning an expansion of their fluffy brood with the addition of a cat in the near future.

CBS Sunday Morning reported in late November that the first couple were hoping to find a feline pal for their two dogs.

Champ and Major follow in a long line of presidential pets, with Theodore Roosevelt having Skip, who is described by the White House Historical Association as a 'short-legged Black and Tan mongrel terrier brought home from a Colorado bear hunt'.

Warren G. Harding had Laddie Boy, who sat in on meetings and had his own Cabinet chair and Franklin Delano Roosevelt had his beloved terrier Fala.

When he declared victory in the 2008 presidential race, Barack Obama told his daughters: 'You have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House.'

Several months later, Bo joined the family, a gift from Senator Ted Kennedy.

President Harry Truman famously said that 'If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog' - and many successors have followed Truman's advice. The first President Bush once said, 'There is nothing like the unconditional love of a dog to help you get through the rough spots.'
