Former Republican Sen. David Perdue filed paperwork on Monday evening to run for Senate in 2022 and is reportedly exploring a campaign against Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock, according to Federal Election Commission documents.

The former Georgia senator lost his position during a January runoff election to Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, allowing Democrats to take control of the Senate.

The FEC documents filed on Monday are designating a "principal campaign committee" titled: "Perdue for Senate."

Aides close to Perdue said he has not decided whether to challenge Warnock next year. A senior adviser to Perdue said the filing is a necessary legal step, adding that Perdue is "leaning heavily toward" running again, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The documents filed signal a future run for Perdue, but he has not publicly announced his candidacy for 2022.

Warnock defeated Republican incumbent Sen. Kelly Loeffler in the special election in January, marking a sweeping blow for two legacy Republican senators.

Perdue would not be running for his old seat, currently held by Ossoff. Loeffler had been appointed to the Senate before the November special election by now-Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp in 2019, and that seat is up for election in 2022.

Perdue is a former business leader, including serving as CEO of Dollar General. He also became chairman of the Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower in 2019.
