Steven Gerrard Rangers panic merchants need to calm it because he's going nowhere - Hotline

Proof that nothing stands still in football can be found in a Hotline which has some Rangers fans predicting a change of manager.

Not even being on the brink of a league title win is enough to convince some that Steven Gerrard won't shortly be on his way to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool while alleged breaches of Covid-19 rules by Rangers players also dominated the calls.

John Bruce emailed: "To all the doom and gloom Rangers fans who've been predicting the club's demise if Gerrard departs for Liverpool - seriously?

"We haven't even had a chance to celebrate winning the league title yet, but they are already looking at a nightmare scenario for the club's future. Let us enjoy the 'now', which is our thoroughly deserved title win, our continuing run in Europe - and the plans already put in place by our forward-thinking board.

"Leave any concerns about outgoing managers and fears for the future to fans of struggling clubs elsewhere."

Samuel Ruddock, Ayr, said: "I can assure Hotline regular John Davidson there will not be a dampener put on our 55th title if Gerrard leaves Rangers. It will be job well done and he can leave with the fans' blessings after delivering us the title. I'm sure fellow Gers fan Brian Quinn will agree with me with his usual positivity about our team reaching the famous 55 titles."

Robert Livingston, Palm Beach, said: "All talk of Gerrard leaving for Liverpool is premature, I can't see that happening anytime soon.

"He's smart enough to know he's on to a winner at Ibrox with the prospect of ongoing success at the club, In the EPL it's very tough for success with the same half dozen top teams battling for silverware and managers are sacked at the drop of a hat. No one man is bigger than Rangers football club the great managers have gone like Bill Struth, Scot Symon, Walter Smith and Graeme Souness but the club still goes on. League title 55 is on it's way, credit where credit's due as it was foretold last July by Record Sport's Gavin Berry."

Now to the alleged Covid-19 controversy.

Ian Tomlinson, Mossblown, said: "If the Covid breaches are proven then there must be some kind of punishment dished out for yet another player rule breach. They fielded a team in a game without receiving test results. A points deduction is surely due."

William Laing emailed: "So some more players of one of our top teams have allegedly been caught breaking the Covid restrictions.

"I'm sure this will give the SFA and the Scottish Government another reason to extend the ban on the lower leagues playing games."

Brian Mitchell, Glasgow, said: "Calum Davidson is the latest manager to say if they defended better they could have won the game.

"If Celtic's big defenders had marked Shaun Rooney instead of the two lightweights that couldn't jump then St Johnstone wouldn't have scored at all. I wish these managers would just accept they were beaten by skill instead of defensive mistakes."

Colin McArdle, Lanarkshire, said: "Neil Lennon's excuse for leaving Albian Ajeti on the bench was because he was suffering from fatigue? Who is Lennon trying to kid? Since he was wrongly appointed manager he has chopped and changed the team on a weekly basis creating a loss of confidence amongst the players. Lennon's faith in the calamitous Shane Duffy proves he has no idea of management."

Gordon Ashley, Ayr, said: "St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin has been proved wrong with his pathetic attack in Greg Taylor with 90-per-cent of football experts saying it was a clear penalty last Wednesday night.

"He's out of order and only a couple of well known pro-Rangers pundits agreeing with him. He should apologise to Celtic and the player."

Steven Richardson, emailed: "Diving in the penalty area should be an automatic red card because it is a conscious decision to gain a dishonest advantage. Cheats in the Olympics get banned but when players dive and cheat it's accepted in football.

"Ban divers for five games and managers would soon be telling their players to stay on their feet."
