Popular cartoon series The Powerpuff Girls is getting a live-action reboot, The CW Network announced earlier this week.

And Today show entertainment reporter Brooke Boney revealed an interesting detail about the animated program while reporting the news on Thursday.

She noted that the main setting of The Powerpuff Girls is a city called Townsville - which was presumably a generic name invented by the show's creators, but happens to be an actual city in northeastern Queensland.

'Did you know that The Powerpuff Girls are actually from a fictional town called Townsville?' she said.

Today co-anchors Karl Stefanovic and Lelia McKinnon were pleasantly surprised to learn the kids' show had unwittingly referenced the Australian coastal city.

'I love it!' Karl declared.

Brooke then confessed she was a big fan of the original Powerpuff Girls series and 'can't wait' for the live-action reboot.

In the Cartoon Network series, Townsville is clearly based on major U.S. cities with skyscrapers, and bears no resemblance to the actual Townsville.

The creators likely chose an obviously generic name for comedic effect without knowing it was a real place in Australia.

There is also another setting in The Powerpuff Girls called Citiesville.

Variety reported on Tuesday that The CW Network had ordered a live-action reboot of The Powerpuff Girls. No casting has been announced yet.

The show will be based on the animated series created by Craig McCracken, which aired for six seasons and 78 episodes from 1998 to 2005.

It will feature the original heroes as 'disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting'.

Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody - of Juno and Jennifer's Body fame - are writing and executive producing the new series.
