Sue Perkins says the Dragon costume she wore on The Masked Singer really fired up her confidence.

The TV star went out in the semi finals on Saturday and said of performing:

"I was strangely calm. I've always had a problem singing as myself - but everything felt better once I had a big mask on my head. I might try it in other stressful situations to be honest - like talking to traffic wardens or going to the dentist."

Former Bake Off host Perkins, 51, was unmasked as Dragon ahead of the programme's final next weekend which will feature Sausage, Badger and Robin.

But she was not disappointed not to make the final and added: "It felt like I'd been very lucky to stay in so long - after all, a long tail and cute eyes can only get you so far when you can barely hold a tune."

Pop star Gabrielle who was unmasked as Harlequin said she was effectively a gagged singer banned from talking backstage.

She said: "The secrecy was crazy, I couldn't have imagined quite how intense it would be. I had to arrive at the studio in a balaclava, a hoodie that says 'don't speak to me', visor and gloves - you can't have any skin on show at all.

"You aren't allowed to talk to 99% of the people that work on the show and rely on giving a thumbs up or shake of the head when asked questions. You have to stay in your dressing room, be escorted from A to B. It's like a military operation, the secrecy is taken so seriously and on the first day was really overwhelming but you get used to it and it's fun playing the game."

Robin, Badger and Sausage were voted through to the final by the studio audience.

Little Britain star Matt Lucas joined the judging panel of Rita Ora, Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall and series newcomer Mo Gilligan as a guest for the week as they tried to guess the identity of the remaining three acts before they removed their masks.

Peter Andre is a new front runner with bookmakers Ladbrokes to be Badger on The Masked Singer.

The Mysterious Girl star has been installed at just 2/1 in the betting to be the voice behind the mask, however Ne-Yo still edges favouritism at 6/4, with ex-Strictly dancer Kevin Clifton at 3/1.

Clues up to now to help you identify the celebrity have included that Badger wrote poetry at school about girls but never showed it to them because he was so shy.

There was also a reference to gardening as he said he "blossomed" when he showed his work to friends.

A poster of the periodic table of elements was also seen on a wall behind him in one of the clips and he was seen fixing a motorbike.

Joss Stone is the new favourite at 5/4 to be unmasked as Sausage, followed closely by Sheridan Smith (2/1) and Stacey Solomon (5/2). Clues included seeing Sausage on a pier, drinking lagers and some potato snacks, which put Sheridan Smith in the frame because of her role in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.

But the beach cafe Sausage was standing by was called Billie's, making the judges think of actress Billie Piper. There was also a pink hammer and mention of a liking for DIY and Sausage wore a blonde wig for her performance on Saturday night.

Most people are convinced Aston Merrygold is Robin and that is a 1/5 odds on bet. Other guesses have included Olly Murs and Joe Swash.

He has dropped a few clues, revealing, "Sport has always been my life" and "I always knew I'd be a footballer". He has also said he represented his country. There have also been lots of boy band references with clips showing Robin walking near to screaming fans and dropping the names of bands like Blue into his conversation.

The surreal show, in which famous contestants wear elaborate costumes to sing in front of the celebrity panel, has returned for a second series.

Other celebs like Sir Lenny Henry, Martine McCutcheon and Mel B have also unmasked on the show.

The first series of The Masked Singer was won by Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts, who performed as Queen Bee. The final of the second series is on Saturday night on ITV.
