Lockdown dodgers told police their poker party was a wake after officers raided a property in Hackney.

A group of 25 gamblers were caught with cards and tables at a basement party in east London.

Police attended the address on Foulden  Road, following reports of the gathering from concerned neighbours.

Once inside, officers found 25 men gathered in the basement with cards, tables, and "gambling machines", the Metropolitan Police said.

However, the men denied they were hosting a poker night - instead claiming that it was a wake.

They each now face a possible fine of up to £800.

PC Aimee Murton, from the local Covid enforcement team, said the event was "foolish and ignorant".

"This was a foolish and ignorant event to hold", she said.

"Those there risked spreading the virus, which has already claimed countless lives across our city.

"Because of their selfish actions, they are each now facing an £800 fine. I would urge each of those who attended this gambling night seriously consider their actions, otherwise they could face an even higher fine for further breaches."
