Chelsea are eyeing a move for Niklas Sule as they face up to missing out on David Alaba.
The versatile Bayern Munich defender is out of contract at the end of the season and will leave the German champions.
Several clubs have considered bringing in the Austrian but it looks as if Real Madrid will win the race.
That leaves the Blues seeking alternatives and Alaba's Bayern team-mate could be a solution.
Sule, formerly of Hoffenheim, is contracted with the Bavarians until 2022 but contact has been made by the west London outfit.
Bild reports that a fee of around ?30m would be needed to kick start discussions regarding a move to Stamford Bridge.
Bayern have several defenders on their books and Chelsea could tempt Sule away with the guarantee of first team football.
New coach Thomas Tuchel will also know the defender well having worked in Germany.
Chelsea had settled on a centre-half pairing under Frank Lampard with Kurt Zouma and Thiago Silva emerging as first choice.
It led Fikayo Tomori to seek pastures new while Antonio Rudiger may now get more opportunities under Tuchel.

The former PSG boss arrived just days before the January transfer window closed and opted against making late moves.
He said: "No, [no gaps to fill] but it is hard for me to judge right now," he said when questioned on possible arrivals.
"I am very happy with what I have seen so far."
Roman Abramovich recently sanctioned over £200m on player transfers so it remains to be seen how heavily Tuchel will be backed in the summer.
He has a host of attacking weapons at his disposal and will be tasked with getting compatriots Kai Havertz and Timo Werner firing on all cylinders.
