Celtic had been linked with a late deadline day move for Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga.

The Hoops were reportedly just one of three interested sides regarding the 21-year-old.

However, any potential deal now appears to be off. Dan Kilpatrick of the Evening Standard revealed that the versatile defender will be staying put in North London, with Jose Mourinho seemingly not keen to let Tanganga go for the second half of the season.

Celtic had made initial contact over a possible loan move after they missed out on long-term target Ben Davies, who looks to be edging closer to a move to Premier League champions Liverpool.

Several Hoops supporters appeared keen to see a deal for Tanganga go through, so they could be disappointed at the update.

It appears as if there's a real possibility the Hoops won't strengthen their centre-back ranks this month, despite Neil Lennon revealing his plans to do so at the beginning of January.

With Shane Duffy set to return to Brighton at the end of the season, Celtic may need more than one centre-back ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, especially with Kristoffer Ajer linked with a move to AC Milan.

It hasn't been a good month in terms of Lennon's pursuit of a centre-back, but we feel the club should now be targeting summer deals in that area right away ahead of a Celtic Park rebuild.
