A poor predicted reliability rating, an outdated infotainment system, sluggish acceleration, and a jittery ride all drag the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander toward the back of the compact SUV class.

The 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander is ranked:

Is the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander a Good Used SUV?

No, the 2019 Outlander is not a good used compact SUV. You'll find many other vehicles in the class to be a better value. The 2019 Toyota RAV4 has a gentler ride and a lot of standard safety features, and the 2019 Mazda CX-5 has sharper handling than the Outlander and a powerful engine option.

The Outlander does have some appealing traits, though. This crossover gets some of the best mpg ratings in the class, and it's relatively inexpensive to buy and own.

Which Used Mitsubishi Outlander Trim Is Right for Me?

The 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander comes in five trim levels: ES, SE, LE, SEL, and GT. All-wheel drive (Mitsubishi calls it super all-wheel control, or S-AWC) is optional throughout the lineup and is standard in the range-topping GT. The GT comes with a 224-horsepower V6 engine, while the other trims have a 166-horsepower four-cylinder.

A plug-in-hybrid (PHEV) powertrain is available in the SEL and GT trims. This setup pairs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with two 60-kW electric motors to produce 190 horsepower. All-wheel drive (S-AWC) is included. Unlike the gas-powered Outlander, the Outlander PHEV only comes with two rows.

Remote start, front and rear parking sensors, and a rear-seat DVD player are available throughout the lineup. To get smartphone connectivity features like Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, you'll have to upgrade to the SE. This trim is available with a few safety features too, but to get more, you'll have to find a selectively equipped SEL or GT model.

How Safe Is the Outlander?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2019 Outlander the highest rating of Good in all six crash tests, and properly equipped Outlanders earned a Top Safety Pick designation. In headlight testing, GT and SEL trims equipped with automatic high-beam headlights received the second-highest rating of Acceptable for outward visibility. GT and SEL trims without the high beams received the second-lowest rating of Marginal. All other trims received the lowest rating of Poor.

The IIHS uses a different scale to evaluate front crash prevention systems. It gave this crossover SUV the highest rating of Superior for its available vehicle-to-vehicle collision mitigation tech and the lowest rating of Basic for its available vehicle-to-pedestrian system.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave this Mitsubishi an overall safety rating of five out of five stars, with five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the frontal crash and rollover tests.

2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander or 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport?

The 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a subcompact SUV, and it's essentially a smaller version of the Outlander. There are a few differences though. The Outlander Sport is missing the third row of its larger sibling. It also lacks a V6 engine option or a plug-in-hybrid model. However, unlike the Outlander, the Outlander Sport can be had with a manual transmission, and it has a better predicted reliability rating. In most other respects, these two Mitsubishis are similar, so choosing between them comes down to preference.

Which Is Better: 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander or 2019 Nissan Rogue?

The 2019 Nissan Rogue is a good compact SUV. Despite having only two rows, it has more cargo space than the Mitsubishi, both in total and behind the rear seats. It also has a gentler ride and gets superior mpg estimates. On top of that, the Nissan has nicer cabin materials and a higher predicted reliability rating. It's the better buy.

Which Is Better: 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander or 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross?

Neither the 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross nor the Outlander are good compact SUVs, but if you must choose one, pick the Outlander. It has greater seating capacity and more cargo room than the Eclipse Cross, as well as stronger V6 engine and plug-in-hybrid powertrain options.

2019 Outlander Performance

How Does the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Drive?

The base four-cylinder engine is noisy. Acceleration from a stop is fairly decent, but anything after that comes more slowly, and passing maneuvers can take some forethought. The V6 that powers the GT feels more muscular.

This crossover exhibits significant body lean around turns, and moderate to large bumps will jostle anyone sitting inside the vehicle. Steering is somewhat numb too.

Does the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Get Good Gas Mileage?

Whether you compare it to three-row SUVs or compact SUVs, the base Outlander gets outstanding fuel economy estimates. Note that the top-trim GT, with its V6 engine and all-wheel drive (or all-wheel control), requires premium gasoline.

2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Alternative Fuels and Charging

The Outlander PHEV has an EPA-rated all-electric range of 22 miles. This plug-in also gets 74 MPG-equivalent in combined city/highway driving.

The battery's charging time depends on the method used:

2019 Outlander Interior

How Many People Does the 2019 Outlander Seat?

Gas-only 2019 Outlander models seat seven people in three rows. The Outlander PHEV lacks third-row seating and only accommodates five. Adults have enough room to sit in the first two rows, but the third row is best left for kids, and some critics say the seats in any row lack sufficient support. It's worth noting that very few compact crossovers even offer a third row of seats.

The cabin gets mixed reviews. Some critics find there to be plenty of soft-touch materials, but others knock the abundance of plastics and outdated interior.

How Many Child Car Seats Fit in the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander?

This SUV has two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors for the second-row outboard seats and an upper tether for the second-row middle seat. There are no tethers for the third row. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-highest rating of Acceptable for ease of use, noting that the lower anchors are set deeply in the seats.

2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Features

Using this Mitsubishi's infotainment system is relatively simple. There are physical buttons and knobs, although they're a bit on the small side. As a whole, the system seems outdated compared to those in rivals.

2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Dimensions

Mitsubishi Outlander Cargo Space

This Mitsubishi has 10.3 cubic feet of space behind the third-row seats and 34.2 cubic feet behind the second row. Both figures are decent for a compact SUV. However, its total of 63.3 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded is well below average. Models with the panoramic sunroof lose a tiny amount from those figures.

The two-row plug-in Outlander Hybrid (PHEV) has 30.4 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 66.6 cubic feet with them folded. As before, adding the sunroof slightly reduces that total.

Where Was the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Built?
