Mayim Bialik first appeared on The Big Bang Theory in 2010, marking her return to steady acting.

The Amy Farrah Fowler star was known for being a child actor, before taking a step back to focus on her PhD in neuroscience.

Speaking on The Social, Mayim revealed the real reason she decided to go for the role, admitting that she didn't audition because she was desperate to get back into acting or loved the show - rather, she needed the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) health insurance.

"I'm sure all of you up north can understand that I was running out of health insurance because that's not considered a human right in this country," she said.

"So I literally figure - I mean, I had a toddler and a newborn and I had been a grad student and my insurance was expiring. I figured if I can just get even a couple of jobs like here or there, I'll be able to get insurance again.

"I did not expect to be a regular on a television show. I had been teaching neuroscience.

"I've tutored Hebrew. I've tutored piano. I wear a lot of hats, you know."

She added: "And I eventually auditioned for this show called The Big Bang Theory which I had never seen, and it changed my life and I got insurance."

Mayim also recently opened up about one of her storylines on the show, admitting she had no idea how her character's relationship with Jim Parsons' character Sheldon Cooper would go.

"I think Jim and I both didn't know where this relationship would go," she told PeopleTV. "There was a lot to us not being a sexually active couple but still being romantically and intimately interconnected in so many ways.

"I would say it's probably the longest-running non-sexual relationship on television, at least that I know of!"

The Big Bang Theory aired on CBS and CBS All Access in the US. You can buy the complete boxset now on DVD and Blu-ray.
