Dogs provide companionship, comfort and emotional support, as well as daily motivation to get their owners out of the house. While all pups love heading outside, there are some breeds which excel at motivating their owners.
"Any dog's behaviour and attitude depend on its training, socialisation and individual personality, but many pedigree dog breeds are known for their high energy which makes them great buddies for active owners," Bill Lambert, head of health and welfare at the Kennel Club, tells Country Living.

1. Shetland Sheepdogs

"Originating from the small Isles of Shetland off the coast of Scotland, Shetland Sheepdogs are intelligent dogs that share similarities with Collies. Their sweet temperament and gentle nature make them a favourite family companion but they are also known for being active, strong and agile dogs," Bill says.
2. German Short-Haired Pointer

"Despite their alert stare, German Pointers are gentle and affectionate dogs that enjoy active exercise, whether on land or water. They make a great running and exercise companion for owners that want a dog with a lot of energy," adds Bill.
3. Brittany

"Originating from France, Brittanys are excellent working dogs which are full of life. They will be a great motivator for owners looking to build an exercise or running routine as they always have energy to spare," Bill tells us. "Brittanys are known to be intelligent, gentle and affectionate."
4. English Springer Spaniel

"Known for their intelligence and happy nature, English Springer Spaniels are active, medium-sized dogs that enjoy exploring the outdoors. They are used to working in adverse conditions and would happily accompany their owners on hikes or muddy runs."
5. Portuguese Water Dog

"Originating from the Mediterranean, Portuguese Water Dogs are tremendously energetic. They are intelligent and obedient but also very hard to tire, which means they need an active owner and exercise buddy."
