Scientists have detected a mutant strain of the coronavirus in Victoria - which they believe to be a precursor to the new United Kingdom variant which escaped hotel quarantine in Victoria in June during the state's second wave.

The Age reported the Doherty Institute in Melbourne found the strain had infected at least 37 people before it was brought under control by the lockdown.

Their data suggests the variant binds more tightly to human cells which makes it more difficult to contain than the original strain.
