President Donald Trump edged out former President Barack Obama as America's most admired man of 2020.

A new Gallup poll found that the outgoing president finally bumped Obama from the top spot he has held in the annual survey for the last 12 years. Trump and Obama tied last year.

Despite Trump's relative unpopularity - he holds just a 39% approval rating - strong admiration from Republicans, combined with Democrats' splitting their top choices, pushed the president to the top of 2020's list.

According to the poll, 18% of Americans name Trump and 15% of Americans name Obama as their most admired man this year.

Nearly half of Republicans, 48%, named Trump, with no other public figure receiving more than 2% of Republicans' votes. Obama is the top choice among Democrats, but at a lower percentage of 32%, a decrease from 41% last year.

President-elect Joe Biden was also commonly named by Democrats, with 13% selecting him as their most admired man this year. Dr. Anthony Fauci took the top spot for 5% of Democrats and just 1% of Republicans, leading to further split among Democrats' choices.

While Obama fell from his top spot, former first lady Michelle Obama retained her title as most admired woman of the year, which she also held in 2018 and 2019. Ten percent of Americans name her as the most admired woman, followed by 6% who name Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and 4% who name current first lady Melania Trump.
