Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is said to have understandably changed his mind over a loan move for young defender Rhys Williams.

The teenager has found himself thrust into the action for the Premier League champions this season in the wake of the injury issues the Reds have been experiencing at the back.

With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out with long-term injuries, and Joel Matip's minutes needing to be managed carefully in the wake of his own concerns, Klopp has been calling upon some of the Reds' lesser lights to partner converted midfielder Fabinho at the back.

Nat Phillips has been seen in the Premier League, but he hasn't been eligible for the Champions League after Liverpool opted not to register him as they thought they wouldn't need him.

Because of that, Williams played some part in all six of Liverpool's Champions League group games, and he then made his Premier League debut in last week's 2-1 win over Tottenham at Anfield in which he impressed up against Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

The 19-year-old spent last season with six-tier club Kidderminster Harriers, and he had been lined up for a switch to a Championship outfit in the current campaign to aid his development.

However, that possibility is now reportedly off the table as Klopp keeps Williams with the Reds first team squad.

Middlesbrough have been one of the second tier clubs linked with a temporary move for the centre-back, and their manager Neil Warnock appeared to be referring to him when he spoke about a failed bid for a player recently.

"I was talking to one top Premier League club over the summer about one of their players," said Warnock.

"The player I was looking at ended up playing in the Champions League two weeks later, so I bet he's glad he didn't come with me!"
