Austin Police Chief David McKichan said in a statement that the hero's "love for his mother and his siblings was proven without a doubt" and that he "saved their lives."

Jaime A. Vaca, 27, the teen's stepfather, was choking Angie Rodriguez when the Julio stepped in, leading the man to grab a knife, according to charges cited by The Star Tribune.

McKichan said cops responded to the incident at 8:50 a.m. local time on Tuesday. In his statement, he described the event as "one of the most challenging and tragic calls" he could remember in the history of the city of about 25,000.

Vaca was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree assault.
