The great Rangers pundit debate as Betfred Cup exit leaves big names split over one crucial question

Rangers' shock Betfred Cup exit to St Mirren on Wednesday night has set tongues wagging up and down the country.

Everyone seems to have a view on whether manager Steven Gerrard's first defeat of the season will lead to another New Year nightmare or just a tiny bump on the road to league success in May.

And Scotland's biggest pundits are split down the middle on what will become of Rangers ' season after the 3-2 loss.

The Buddies are through to the Hampden semi-finals to face Livingston as Hibs face St Johnstone while Gerrard has shouldered the blame for passing up a chance to win his first trophy in Scotland.

Would the manager take a cup exit over a dip in the league? Just how damaging could it be in the long run?

Here's what some of Scottish football's famous faces had to say on that very issue.

Davie Provan - 'The league is everything'

Former Celtic hero Provan spent nine years at Parkhead and knows all too well the demand for silverware in Glasgow.

But he reckons Gerrard would have been happy to sacrifice the Betfred Cup if given the choice between winning that or stopping the Hoops' 10 In A Row charge.

He told Go Radio: "It would have been very symbolic to win a trophy.

"But, I wonder, given the choice, what would he have preferred - going out of the Betfred Cup, sure he'll get stick for it but I believe the league is everything this season.

"I just think the league, this season, because Celtic are going for the 10 and Rangers are trying to stop it.

"I wonder, given the choice, whether Steven Gerrard would say: 'I'll take a hit in the Betfred Cup, we have to preserve this lead in the league.'

"If anything, it might just act as, and I'm not saying they need it given the way Rangers have been playing, a wake up.

"But it won't do them any harm in terms of letting them know they're not going to steamroller everyone, every time."

Steven Thompson - 'The supporters will be devastated'

Former Rangers striker Thompson was less convinced the club will be able to shrug off the shock defeat.

He told the BBC after the game that fans will be "devastated" with the surprise exit given the opposition left in the competition.

Thompson said: "I think Rangers as a club, the supporters, will be absolutely devastated by that.

"The season they've been having they would have thought that they would have come here this evening and progressed into the semi-final - playing against St. Mirren in a quarter-final with the Celtic not in it, I think a lot of Rangers supporters will have fancied their name was on the trophy already.

"But Aberdeen came here in the last round and went away as losers. Tonight Rangers didn't bring the performance levels that they've been bringing on a weekly basis so far this season.

"Every team is going to have a dip, and every team is going to have a game where they don't reach their full potential, and that was Rangers this evening.

"Rangers didn't reach their potential, but St. Mirren still had to score the goals that they did and defend the way that they did.

"It's a huge moment for St. Mirren."

Alex McLeish - 'It was a must win game'

Former Ibrox manager McLeish has been there and done that in terms of recovering from bad defeats.

But he reckons Gerrard will have been happier to take that first blow in the league with their large points advantage than bow out of a cup competition.

He told Go Radio: "In the league you can always catch up.

"The prestige of winning a trophy this early in the season would give them an enormous fillip going into the tail end of the season.

"It would be just fantastic for them given they haven't won a trophy for a while anyway.

"That's what I would've said, it was a must-win game.

"Obviously, they didn't and Stevie has to regroup. Rangers have to show a bit of resilience."

Charlie Adam - 'Big prize still up for grabs'

Former Light Blues midfielder Adam, taking to Twitter, simply insists it's still all about the league this time around.

Richard Foster - 'Reaction is crucial'

Foster believes the proof is in Rangers' reaction, revealing he's adamant the loss can just be a blip if Gerrard's men recover well.

But the ex-Ibrox right-back believes the next game at home to Motherwell on Saturday will decide if it's actually a warning of things to come.

He told the BBC: "It's about how they react to this, it's the first time they've faced any kind of adversity this season.

"How are they going to react to this? If they come back with a resounding win you can say it's just a blip.

"If they struggle against Motherwell, as well, that's when the doubts could start to creep in."
