A new Pink Panther movie is currently in development.

According to Deadline, the film will be a mixture of live-action footage and animation and is set to be directed by Jeff Fowler, who is no stranger to combining the two having helmed this year's surprise hit Sonic the Hedgehog.

Chris Bremner (Bad Boys for Life) has been lined up to write the reimagining, which will be released by MGM. Meanwhile, Julie Andrews and Lawrence Mirisch will produce for Geoffrey Productions - Andrews' late husband Blake Edwards was a writer and director of numerous Pink Panther movies, including the first film to feature the character.

Aladdin's Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will produce alongside, while Walter Mirisch and Ryan Halprin will be executive producers.

The Hollywood Reporter has teased some plot details, too, saying that the new movie's pink panther doesn't talk, but does team up with a "smooth operating" inspector to help solve a case.

"Popular the world over, the legacy of the iconic Pink Panther has endured for more than 50 years and continues to be discovered by new generations," said Michael De Luca, MGM Film Group chairman, and Pamela Abdy, MGM Film Group president.

"We are so happy to come together with Jeff, Chris, Larry, Julie, Dan, Jonathan, Walter and Ryan to bring one of MGM's most well-loved franchise back to the big screen and in a way audiences have never seen before."

Pink Panther, the feline cartoon character that is, was created back in 1963. Its first film appearance was in The Pink Panther, which was co-written and directed by Julie Andrews' late husband Blake Edwards and starred David Niven and Peter Sellers.

In the movie, the 'Pink Panther' was the nickname given to the sizeable diamond that notorious jewel thief The Phantom was attempting to steal. During the film's end credits though, the rock turned into the now-iconic cat.
