Like the Nissan Frontier on which it is based, reviewers said the 2010 Suzuki Equator is a good performer, with strong engines and a refined ride. They also found that, like the Frontier, the Equator is fairly capable off-road. The 2010 Equator has a standard manual transmission and four-cylinder engine that reviewers found adequate for general city and highway driving, though most reviewers preferred the available V6, which they said is the better choice for those who plan to do a lot of towing or hauling. Two- and four-wheel drive models are available, although four-wheel drive is only available with the V6 and automatic transmission. A two-wheel drive Equator achieves 17/22 mpg city/highway with the four-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission, which is average for the class. The Equator can tow up to 6,500 pounds.
Like the Frontier, the 2010 Suzuki Equator came as either a four-seat extended cab or a five-seat crew cab truck. Reviewers found the front bucket seats comfortable and supportive, and appreciated that they're covered in an easy-to-clean fabric. The extended cab has two rear jump seats, which most reviewers said are best left to small kids. The crew cab is a better choice if you plan to regularly carry back-seat passengers. Reviewers said that, like most of the other trucks in the class, the Equator's cabin is straightforward, but not particularly upscale. When it was new, the Equator came standard with crank windows and few notable other standard amenities. Features that were optional when the Equator was new include air conditioning, a four-speaker CD stereo, power windows, mirrors and door locks, Bluetooth and a removable Garmin navigation system.

The 2010 Nissan Frontier is very similar to the Equator, but it has a better safety score. Like the Equator, the Frontier drew high marks from reviewers for its strong V6 engine and comfortable ride, as well as its off-road capability.
The 2010 Dodge Dakota scores highly thanks to its spacious cabin, good performance and strong safety score. A V8-equipped Dakota can also tow more than the Equator.
