NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Chris Christie, a longtime ally of President Donald Trump, is saying "show us the evidence" as the president continues to cast doubt on the integrity of the democratic process.

In his first public appearance since election night, Trump on Thursday renewed his unfounded claims that Democrats are trying to "steal" the election from him.

"If you count the legal votes, I easily win. If you count the illegal votes, they can try to steal the election from us," Trump claimed without providing any details or evidence.

State and federal officials have not reported any instances of widespread voter fraud and there is no evidence that any votes cast illegally are being counted or that the process is unfair and corrupt.

Trump's campaign has been mounting legal challenges in several states over the vote count and the president has promised that there will "be a lot of litigation."

Christie told George Stephanopoulos that it is Trump's "right to pursue legal action," but added "show us the evidence."

Following the president's remarks, the former New Jersey governor told ABC News on Thursday, "We heard nothing today about any evidence. I want to know what backs up what he said so that I can analyze it and let me tell you, if he's right I'd be outraged, and if he's wrong then the American people are going to be able to make the judgement about this election that the results have been fair.

"This kind of thing, all it does is inflame without informing and we cannot permit inflammation without information," Christie said.
