Manchester City duo Kevin De Bruyne and Aymeric Laporte have handed Pep Guardiola a major boost by returning to training ahead of the game against West Ham.

Midfielder De Bruyne sat out City's last two wins against Arsenal and Porto due to muscle fatigue, while defender Laporte also missed the fixtures during the last week with a minor issue.

However, both took part in a light training session on Thursday,  although as stated by Sportsmail on Wednesday the Premier League clash against the Hammers may come too soon for the pair.

De Bruyne recently bemoaned his heavy workload, revealing that his 'body is screaming out for a rest but nobody listens to the players,' before then leaving the Belgium camp following their 2-1 defeat by England during the latest international break.

The latest news will nevertheless provide Guardiola with some positive injury news after further blows on Wednesday evening in their 3-1 victory against Porto in their opening fixture of this season's Champions League.

Centre back Nathan Ake - who has with Eric Garcia covered in Laporte's absence - suffered a groin injury in the hours before the win against the Portuguese side.

Meanwhile, midfielder Fernandinho was forced off with a muscle problem only five minutes after coming on as a substitute, with Guardiola later claiming he could be out for as long as six weeks.

The City boss also has fitness concerns over striker Gabriel Jesus and his muscular injury as well as left-back Benjamin Mendy.

City's season has been ravaged by injuries, while a number of first-team regulars tested positive for coronavirus last month.

Guardiola and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan - who scored a sumptuous free-kick in the victory against Porto having tested positive for Covid-19 last month - have both suggested City have been struggling physically so far this season.

The Germany international told BT Sport after the Porto game: 'If I am being honest, we are struggling a little bit, again today with Fernandinho going off.

'We have players in different conditions, I am not 100 per cent there because of Covid, we are all in different moments, and it will not end for a while.'

Asked before the Porto game what City had been lacking so far this season, Guardiola said: 'Lack of time, we start late, we have had a lot of injuries and we need time. Once we have it we will be back to our best, it is what it is.'
