Traffic delays are expected along the Queensland border today ahead of the long weekend and school holidays.

The situation is likely to be worse than normal, due to confusion with the border exemption passes and an IT bungle.

Restrictions have now lifted on parts of the NSW Far North Coast, prompting thousands of people to take to the roads.

Yesterday - hours after the border rules were relaxed - an estimated 60 per cent of cars were sidelined because people didn't have the correct border declaration pass, due to confusion about the wording.

Delays at the border were also been fuelled by an IT issue which meant seven suburbs were not recognised within the new system.

But that glitch has since been fixed and those trying to get into Queensland from NSW must now apply for a border zone travel pass, the X pass, instead of the previous border resident pass.

While the long weekend is set to give tourism operators in Queensland a welcome boost, borders are not expected to be relaxed with the rest of NSW until at least November 1.

Five NSW local government areas are now allowed back into Queensland, meaning an extra 150,000 residents from those regions can enter the state without needing to quarantine.

The changes came into effect just after 1am yesterday and includes areas including Ballina, Lismore, Byron Bay and Glen Innes.

This also means Queenslanders will now be permitted to enter those NSW locations and return north without having to quarantine.
