The Best Face Mask for Fall Might Be a Neck Gaiter

Fall has begun and with it comes the wardrobe transformation you've been waiting for. Time to swap out linen shorts for sweats (or your favorite hard pants), breezy short-sleeve shirts for some big knits, and summer sandals for...fall sandals. And here in 2020, fall also means swapping out your collection of breathable, moisture-wicking face masks for coverings that can stand up to a brisk autumn morning.

Your first instinct when looking for fall face masks might be to go all Mr. Autumn Man and pick up some flannel. And this will certainly do a lot to keep your face a little warmer. But why stop there? Why not seize upon this moment of normalized mask wearing as an opportunity to embrace a beefy, full-blown neck and cheek warmer?

A neck gaiter is just the thing. Neck gaiters are basically stretchy leg warmers for the face. Popular among runners in the winter, you usually put a gaiter (or buff) on like a headband. Then you slide it down to your neck, then adjust the fabric to cover your nose. The result is something that functions like an unfussy infinity scarf and a cloth face mask at the same time-you get both protection from the Coronavirus and protection from whipping winds.

One small caveat: a neck gaiter might not be as protective as a medical-grade face mask. One study from earlier this summer was reported to indicate that wearing a gaiter might be worse than wearing no mask, but this takeaway was quickly debunked by the authors of the study and subsequent research by aerosol specialists. The general consensus on face coverings was summed up well by Dr. Ivette Murphy-Aguilu, an infectious disease specialist who practices in Chicago, whom I talked to this summer: "The best mask is one that you find comfortable and can tolerate wearing." And there is nothing more comfortable than a cozy neck gaiter when temperatures fall. Below, we've gathered a healthy mix of gaiters of all kinds to keep your face cozy.
