Liverpool are edging closer to completing the signing of Bayern Munich and Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara.
The ECHO understands that discussions between the Reds and the German giants have been ongoing and although a deal is not yet at an advanced stage, Liverpool are hopeful of getting a deal over the line.
Should everything go according to plan, and the negotiations continue without any late snags or hitches, the central-midfielder could join the reigning Premier League champions for £27million.
Should a deal be completed, Thiago's arrival at Anfield would be another huge statement of intent shown by the Liverpool board after coming under fire for a lack of new arrivals so far this summer. To date, Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas has been Jurgen Klopp's only new addition this summer.
However, Thiago could take Klopp's tally of new arrivals to two, with Liverpool working hard to get a deal over the line for the Spaniard, who is renowned for being one of the best central-midfielders in the world. Still at 29-years-old, it could be argued that the former Barcelona man still has his best years ahead of him.
Should he complete a move to the Premier League, the Spaniard, who was actually born in Italy, will no doubt be one of the stand-out signings of the summer, with him being renowned for his passing ability, ability to break up play and his desire to get forward and join the attack.
Whilst Thiago's arrival on Merseyside would be of great benefit to Klopp and the Liverpool supporters, his arrival in England would no doubt generate a sense of frustration amongst Manchester United's supporters.
The Old Trafford club have been heavily linked with a move for the Bayern Munich ace for much of the summer but never lodged an official bid to try and secure his services.
With that in mind, the news that Liverpool are now hopeful of securing the signing of Thiago has been met with a wave of disappointment from United's fans on social media. Here is what some of them have had to say on Twitter in response to the news of Thiago's impending arrival at Anfield...
@victorebukaezea: "To all #MUFC Fans around the world this season we all are going to cry by the time Thiago sends those passes to salah, we all know what is going to happen city have strengthened there team, I haven't even talked about Chelsea look at Spurs with bale."
@MarySheDevilUtd: "Gutted about Thiago but I think it was always Liverpool who were gonna sign him. Another one bites the dust and the disappointment with our transfer window continues. I'll be doing a lunch time show to talk about it further. #mufc "
@Navan_Lad: "Why #mufc would not go for a player like Thiago for ?30 million is mind blowing. Liverpool are getting a class act, nobody will be able to get near him all season."
@JoePardoe92: "On a day where it's likely Liverpool will sign Thiago and Spurs will near enough confirm Bale & Reguilon. I'm sure #MUFC social media team are prepping a good post about selling our third kit and also what we did against our weekend opponents 10 years ago."
@VidicsHead: "Gutted if Thiago goes to Liverpool, partly because I'd love him at United. Mainly because he's pretty much the perfect player for them. I hope he doesn't but I reckon he's going to improve them drastically! As if they're not far ahead enough as it is."
@conorlooter: "Thiago a great signing for liverpool, he will fit in perfectly because he will be coached right. Would have been good for utd but there are bigger problems in every other part of the team apart from centre mid, rw and lb especially. A big couple weeks ahead for united."
@ItsMeaney: "Thiago Liverpool bound. Come on Ed, do your job."
