Camaros at Barrett Jackson have always been an exciting topic. But this year was really exceptional. Besides the long list of F-bodys crossing the block there was one Camaro that will be talked about forever. Namely the very original 1969 Camaro ZL1, lot No. 1409. With its all-aluminum 427 ZL1 engine, Muncie M22 (heavy duty) 4-speed, and 4.10 gears all wrapped in a six cylinder looking body since new, this Camaro drew huge crowds in Scottsdale. Assembled new in the Norwood, Ohio plant this ZL1 wears the very popular No. 72 Hugger Orange hue since new. And this ZL1 is the only one ordered new with the optional NC8 Chambered exhaust system. An option that was later cancelled during the 1969 model year due to some customers not being able to successfully explain to the law that their Camaro's exhaust system was not modified. This author can attest that the chambered exhaust system made your exhaust note sound very similar to a pair of well-worn, glass packs.

Besides the stunning ZL1 there were plenty of Camaros with all sorts of options and condition. Everything from survivor cars to full out modified late model race cars.

At the Barrett Jackson auction we found quite a few early Z/28s and although the prices of these have settled somewhat over the years, there was one that brought over $100,000. That was lot No. 1149. We spoke with the owner who told us he'd owned the car for 20 years and was planning to move to another state, so he decided to sell his Z/28. This one was a very late Norwood built Camaro (October 1969) and also included the Rally Sport package. The drivetrain was largely original with the 302 engine, M21 Muncie 4-speed and 3.73 axle ratio rear end. The condition was excellent too.

The folks at Chevrolet Performance showcased a late-model race car and for the rest of the Camaro field there were plenty of Pro-Touring, Restored, Customs, and survivors to look at and bid on. We photographed quite a few so please feel free to check out our gallery of Camaros.
