Jessica Winfield, 50, who was known as Martin Ponting when she was jailed for life 12 years ago, has been relocated from maximum security HMP Whitemoor, Cambridgeshire, to HMP Bronzefield in Ashford, Surrey, according to the Sun.

The move is said to have caused disquiet at the women's jail, with one inmate threatening to self-harm to stay away from Winfield.

One of the rapist's two victims told the newspaper: "I feel like it mocks the people he offended against. It is a kick in the teeth for me and his other victim."

Winfield is not the first transgender offender to be relocated from a male to a female institution.

If a prisoner's gender is legally recognised, the prison service is obliged to move them.

Transgender inmates first won the right to have gender reassignment surgery on the NHS in 1999 after legal action was brought by six prisoners.

A spokesman for the Prison Service said: "We do not comment on individuals."
