Interstate 80 remains is closed from Colfax to the Nevada state line due to snow and whiteout conditions, Caltrans said.
The closure began Thursday night as a snow storm created whiteout conditions in the Sierra and at the Lake Tahoe basin.
By Friday morning, whiteout conditions persisted. Caltrans also closed Highway 20 at Nevada City.
Around 5 p.m., Caltrans said it hopes to reopen I-80 to passenger traffic by the evening as the weather became calmer.
