A recent visit to Yellowstone National Park nearly turned into a catastrophic experience for two friends when they had to run for their lives when a bison charged at them.

Video of the frightening encounter shows the moment when the bull starts chasing after the two women, who haven't been identified, while terrified bystanders look on.

One of the women was able to escape, but her friend wasn't as lucky: she tripped and fell as the massive mammal got dangerously close to her.

YouTube user Cloie Musumecci shared the video with local news station KRTV and said that the woman "is a Montana local so she knew to play dead in that situation."

While onlookers scream in horror, and some start running towards her to help, the woman remained on the ground, motionless.

The strategy worked: the bison can be seen smelling her for a few seconds, before galloping away.

The woman escaped the terrifying episode "without a scratch," Musumecci said.

According to the U.S. Department of Interior, bison are the largest mammals in North America.

Males (called bulls) can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand 6 feet tall. Females (called cows) can weigh up to 1,000 pounds and reach a height of 4 to 5 feet.
