Aston Villa have been rocked by news that first choice left-back Matt Targett faces up to three weeks on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury, according to The Mirror.

Targett suffered the injury early on in Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Villa Park and needed to be replaced by deputy Neil Taylor.

The Mirror reports that Targett will be out for two to three weeks with his latest hamstring issue which means he could miss the next four matches against Liverpool, Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Everton.

Targett has had trouble with his hamstrings throughout the season with this the third occasion that he's suffered a similar injury.

The 24-year-old joined Villa from boyhood club Southampton last summer and has made 28 starts under Dean Smith across all competitions.

Targett's absence is likely to see Taylor given an extended run in the team at left-back. The Welshman's last Premier League start came in the 6-1 defeat to Manchester City on January 12.

Smith also has the option of playing either Tyrone Mings or Kortney Hause at left-back, while right sided defender Frederick Guilbert is believed to be nearing a return from injury.
