Celtic will allow Brendan Rodgers to speak to Arsenal

Read Sport
Celtic's majority shareholder, Dermot Desmond, says the Scottish champions will not stand in Brendan Rodgers' way if Arsenal want to speak to him as the Gunners look for a replacement for the outgoing Arsene Wenger. Rodgers has been installed as the bookmakers favourite to take over from Wenger at the Emirates and speaking to Sky Sports, Desmond said that the club will allow their manager to speak to the Gunners if an approach is made. He said: "I'm glad he's the favourite. He's an outstanding person. We wouldn't want him to leave but we won't force him to stay. Hopefully his love for the club and the setup here will induce him to stay at the club." When he was directly asked if the club would allow Arsenal to speak to the ex-Liverpool manager, Desmond said: "Absolutely. I don't think you can put handcuffs on anybody if they want to go to a club as good as Arsenal. It will be Brendan's decision and his decision only." Wenger will continue to manage Arsenal until the end of the season, where he will bring to an end his 22 year run as the club's manager.... read more

Leicester City vs Southampton: Match preview

Read Sport
Southampton manager Mark Hughes has asked for "focus" from his side as they prepare to face Leicester City in a must-win encounter in the Premier League. Saints have won just one game in the Premier League since the end of November after embarking on a shocking run of form. The visitors come into the game on the back of a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at the hands of Chelsea despite being 2-0 up with an hour gone. As for Leicester, they also tasted defeat as they were beaten 2-1 by Burnley at Turf Moor. It's really hard to see how Mark Hughes side can get out of the drop zone now with just five games remaining and with Saints currently placed five points away from escaping the drop zone. No points have come from the club's last four games as they have lost their last four outings, conceding three in each game in the process. The Saints have struggled on their travels, too, winning just twice and picking up only 12 points from their 16 away games. As for the Foxes, they haven't performed brilliantly but are now safe in the division and don't have too much to play for between now and the end of the season. The two sides have always been well matched but the desire for a result is much higher for Saints with them really struggling in the Premier League. Saints boss Hughes has this week sat down and spoken to the media ahead of the trip to Leicester in what will be a vital game for the club. As reported by the club's official website, Hughes said: "We've just got to focus on what we need to do. Good performances are okay up to a point, but we need to put points on the board. The message is to enjoy the challenge. It's not an easy situation but don't be cowed by it, just get out there and show people what you are about." "You have the opportunity to make a statement every time you put the shirt on. There is a lot of talk about fear of failure. My interpretation of that is you should not allow people the opportunity to criticise you and use that motivation to drive yourself on to bigger and better things." In terms of team news, Saints are set to welcome back club captain, Steven Davis back into the squad for the first time in two months following injury. Mario Lemina has been ruled out after picking up a problem in his back which has caused further issues in his hamstring, while Sofiane Boufal is unlikely to feature as he has an illness. As for the hosts, Vicente Iborra has been ruled out of the encounter with a hamstring injury. Kasper Schmeichel and Shinji Okazaki will both have late fitness tests after not training with the squad so far this week. Daniel Amartey has been ruled out, however, despite returning to first team training yesterday. It's a must win game for the Saints against their former boss Claude Puel and if the players can perform for the full game like they did in the first-half against Chelsea, then they will surely pick up a positive result against a struggling Leicester side. I think that Saints will just nick this one 1-0 on a nervy night at the King Power Stadium.... read more

Speculation has surrounded Scheiderlin's future at Goodison Park and although he didn't field questions over his tenure with the club, he admitted that he believes Everton will be his final venture in the top flight of English football. Speaking to beIN Sports, as cited by French news outlet Foot Marseille, Schneiderlin opened up about his ambitions for the future and admitted he was not keen on joining yet another Premier League club in the near future. The France international has endured yet another difficult season on Merseyside, with a number of the club's supporters growing frustrated with his attitude and underwhelming displays. Schneiderlin has been in and out of the starting line-up this term but is seemingly still valued as a key member of the club's first-team squad. Read Sport
Southampton are reportedly still keeping tabs on Norwich City playmaker James Maddison. According to claims from the Mirror, six Premier League clubs are eyeing a summer swoop for the England Under-21 international who has been in impressive form for Norwich this term. Arsenal legend admits empty Emirates could negatively impact the team

Read Sport
Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour has admitted that he can see there being more empty seats at the Emirates as the Gunners look to get back into the Champions League, as reported by the Evening Standard. Low attendances have been common at the Emirates this season with a staggeringly low total of just 44,064 watching the club's EFL Cup win over Doncaster Rovers earlier on in the campaign. Just 30,000 went through the gates for the Europa League tie with BATE Borisov earlier in the season, with fans put off by the poor performances on the pitch. The club have still got a lot to play for with Burnley hot on their heels, just two points behind them and ready to pounce if the Gunners make a mistake. The two sides are due to face each other after the Gunners' Europa League tie with Atletico Madrid in a match which will have a huge baring on who finishes 6th in the Premier League this season. Parlour has had his say on the current fan situation: "I'm sure there'll be more empty seats at the Emirates towards the end of the season, and maybe they can take advantage of that."... read more

Aubameyang was wary of Lacazette when he arrived

Read Sport
Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has claimed that he was worried about how he would get on with Alexandre Lacazette when he arrived at the club. Aubameyang has revealed that he was not "100%" about Lacazette due to a troubled relationship he had with Lyon players in the past. The Gabon international faced Lyon a number of times during his days in the French league with St Etienne. The forward joined Arsenal in January from Borussia Dortmund for a club-record fee thought to be in the region of £57m. Speaking to The Evening Standard, Aubameyang said this: "My friend Lacazette was at Lyon when I was at St Etienne. He's a player I appreciate and was good for me when I arrived here as he's a nice person, very positive." "I wasn't 100 per cent sure about him when I came here as there were some Lyon players I didn't get on well with but he wasn't someone I had problems with when I played against them." "I'm really happy to get to know someone so positive and he helped me settle into the dressing room." Lacazette and Aubameyang have scored Premier League goals between them for Arsenal this season. Aubameyang has only started eight times in the English top-flight, though, scoring six goals. Lacazette, meanwhile, has scored 11 goals in 23 games since joining from Lyon last summer.... read more

Conte backs Batshuayi to recover swiftly

Read Sport
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has backed Michy Batshuayi to undergo a speedy recovery after the forward was ruled out for the rest of the season. Batshuayi joined Borussia Dortmund in the January transfer window on a loan deal and was in a rich vein of form for the Bundesliga club. However, he recently sustained ligament damage and will therefore miss the remainder of the 2017/18 campaign. Conte discussed Batshuayi's condition during his pre-match press conference on Wednesday ahead of the Blues' game with Burnley. The Italian manager insisted that the striker can still recover in a short period of time despite seeing his season brought to an abrupt end. As quoted by Get West London, Conte had this to say about Bashuayi's injury: "In this moment I have no idea (whether he will make the World Cup). I hope for him to recover from this injury. I had this type of injury when I was a player and it was two months to recover well. But he's a young and strong player and he can do this recovery in a short time." "Usually when our players are on loan and when there is an injury, especially a serious injury, they come back to try to recover here with our medical department. This happened with other players who have gone on loan and been injured." Batshuayi will be desperate to return to full fitness ahead of June's World Cup in Russia, where he will be hoping to feature for Belgium. The ex-Marseille star's future at Stamford Bridge remains massively uncertain but Conte is clearly supporting the player in his bid to make a speedy recovery in the coming months.... read more

Leicester vs Southampton: Opposition Dangerman

Read Sport
With relegation looking more and more likely by the week, Southampton have some serious work to do if they are to retain their top flight status. Saints travel to Leicester on Thursday, knowing defeat would pile even more pressure on Mark Hughes' side, who currently sit five points adrift of safety. Leicester have become a bit stagnant under Claude Puel as of late, with last week's defeat at Burnley giving the Clarets a nine point advantage in the race for European football next season. Southampton were defeated 3-2 by Chelsea on Saturday, having had a two-goal advantage for 70 minutes, but an eight-minute defensive capitulation saw an Olivier Giroud double and an effort from Eden Hazard hand Chelsea the points. Hughes and the team will know they have to bounce back to stand any chance of survival. But who should we be most wary of? Jamie Vardy Leicester's two key players are Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez, with Southampton needing to keep these two quiet if we are to get anything from the match. The reason I chose Vardy is simply down to our defensive frailties as of late. With Jack Stephens suspended, the defence will need to step up to thwart any of the Foxes' attacks. On too many occasions this season, Southampton have conceded soft goals which have cost us too many points that we can afford. So now, with five games to go, our back line will need to be on top of their game and boost our chances of remaining a top flight club.... read more

Everton winger admits his frustrations over debut season

Read Sport
Nikola Vlasic has struggled to make an impact in his first season as an Everton player. As claimed by the Liverpool Echo, the Croatian international is irritated by his struggles in a Toffees shirt and has been left frustrated by his lack of progress with Everton. Vlasic was used from time to time under Ronald Koeman and David Unsworth following his summer move but has evidently struggled to impress Sam Allardyce since his arrival at Goodison Park. The winger has made only 17 appearances for the club since his move from Hajduk Split in the summer transfer window; a tally which has seemingly underwhelmed and frustrated him immensely. Vlasic will be hopeful that he can play a more significant role in Everton's first-team squad next season, with it being likely that the club will appoint a new manager in the summer. The 20-year-old joined the club in a deal rumoured to be worth £10m but is yet to impress in Everton colours.... read more

Southampton have the opportunity to put some pressure on the teams around them as they face Leicester City in the Premier League tomorrow night. Due to Saints' participation in the FA Cup, the tie has been rescheduled from its original date, which was due to be this Saturday. Mark Hughes pleased with Alonso FA Charge

Read Sport
Southampton manager Mark Hughes has welcomed the Football Association's decision to charge Marcos Alonso for violent conduct, following his late tackle on Shane Long. The Spaniard initially escaped punishment from match referee Mike Dean, who allegedly failed to see the challenge on the Southampton forward, in a game where the Blues fought back from two goals down to win 3-2 at St. Mary's. The Independent reported that Saints boss Mark Hughes was disappointed with the standard of top-flight referees, but he is now pleased the FA have taken action. He said: "It has been looked at again and I think there is a quick turnaround on these things, so we should hear if there is a suspension put in place. I think it was the right call." Hughes felt that the circumstances of the game would have been different if the officials had dealt with the incident. "Clearly it was a poor challenge and should have been seen by the officials. The fourth official, assistant referee and the referee were all pretty close to it. The decision in my view would have been the boy would have been sent off and the circumstances of the game would have been different." Alonso has been given until 18:00 BST on Wednesday to appeal the decision. If the decision is upheld, the Spaniard will miss Chelsea's next three games including Thursday night's trip to Burnley and Sunday's FA Cup semi-final meeting with Southampton.... read more
