Harry Kane £5 notes: World Cup tribute fivers in circulation and could be worth £50k

Evening Standard
An artist has etched Harry Kane's face onto six £5 notes and claims they could be worth a fortune. Graham Short is well known for his previous tiny portraits of Jane Austen on fivers. And another engraving of the Queen on the eye of a needle fetched £100,000 at auction. This time he has done tiny engravings onto six £5 notes to mark England striker Kane winning the Golden Boot, with six goals, at the World Cup. Mr Short wants to give one to Kane and one to the Football Association, and has already spent three of the remaining four. One of the six Harry Kane engravings (Tony Huggins-Haig) His team reckon the fivers could go for £50,000 a piece. Mr Short explained: "I was watching the World Cup, as many people were, and it looked like Harry Kane would get the Golden Boot, which was exciting. Graham Swift at work creating a Harry Kane engraving (Tony Huggins-Haig) "When he did, I started thinking it would be great to mark that by putting his portrait on a £5 note and got to work." He continued: "I spent the first Harry Kane note in Meriden, which is the centre of England, only a few miles from the M40 and M42, and so that note could travel in any direction. Harry Kane after he scored a hat-trick against Panama (Adam Davy/PA) "Now I've just been to Edinburgh and spent one in the Elephant House in Edinburgh, the coffee shop where JK Rowling first went as a young mum and started writing Harry Potter. I just liked the magical feeling of that. It's not a wealthy area and I'm hoping that this note could help to change the life of someone in that area who finds it." He will spend the final note in Northern Ireland. Mr Short added: "It's just a bit of fun, but it also puts my art beyond the walls of a gallery. "My art sells for a lot of money now and it's really out of reach for most people, but if they find this and sell it and make a lot of money I'll be really pleased with that."... read more

Tommy Robinson has received £20k in Bitcoin since he was jailed as support for ex-EDL leader rockets online

Evening Standard
Tommy Robinson has received up to £20,000 in Bitcoin since he was jailed as support for the former English Defence League leader has rocketed online. Fans of Robinson's official Facebook page have increased by almost 10 per cent, to just over 830,000 followers, since he was jailed in May. The rise is nearly 20 per cent on YouTube, to 230,000, where the far right activist, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, encourages viewers to support his work with Bitcoin contributions. Followers from as far afield as Istanbul and Washington have sent Robinson, 35, almost £20,000 worth of Bitcoin, including a payment of more than £5,500 which passed through his Bitcoin wallet on the day he was jailed. Robinson was today freed on bail after his 13-month jail term for contempt of court was quashed. The majority of the Bitcoin payments came in the week after he was imprisoned on May 25, as figures from around the world painted his cause as an issue of free speech rather than contempt of court. Right-wing media outlets including Fox News, Breitbart and Robinson's former employer, Rebel Media, also flocked to his cause over the last two months, alongside high-profile figures including Donald Trump Jr and actress Roseanne Barr, and internet personalities associated with the so-called alt-right. Following his successful challenge against the contempt of court finding, far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders was among those showing their support to Robinson, tweeting that it was "fantastic news!" At an event last month, funded in part by US think-tank Middle East Forum and organised by former Breitbart UK editor Raheem Kassam, leading far-right politicians from Europe voiced their support for Robinson and slammed the perceived evils of Islam. http://players.brightcove.net/1348423965/default_default/index.html?videoId=5816559809001 Tommy Robinson freed after winning contempt of court challenge Gregg Roman, director of Middle East Forum (MEF), which has also lobbied American politicians about Robinson's case, said: "The Middle East Forum's efforts to rally international support for Tommy Robinson's release were vindicated today." Commenting on Wednesday's High Court decision to release Robinson, Nick Lowles, chief executive of Hope Not Hate, said: "Far from being a martyr for 'free speech', his are the actions of a dangerous, narcissistic extremist attempting to unite the far right around his virulent Islamophobic agenda." Heidi Beirich, deputy director of the Southern Poverty Law Centre, which monitors hate groups across the US, said the level of support for Robinson is "extraordinary". She said: "I've never seen anything like this. It's not typical to have those kind of political officials advocating on behalf of people who take part in street fights and anti-Muslim rallies. It's a shock." Read more Tommy Robinson freed on bail after winning contempt of court challenge Robinson was jailed earlier this year over an allegation that he committed contempt of court by filming people in a criminal trial at Leeds Crown Court and broadcasting footage on social media. He successfully appealed the jail term on Wednesday claiming it was "excessive" and the hearing was "rushed". Three leading judges in London quashed the contempt finding and granted Robinson conditional bail from a 13-month jail sentence pending new proceedings at the Old Bailey. The judges said that a fresh hearing should be held "as soon as reasonably possible". Additional reporting by Press Association.... read more
