Moment hammer-wielding moped gang scuppered by hero lorry driver in central London

Evening Standard logo
A hammer-wielding gang of moped thieves were blocked from stealing a scooter by a heroic lorry driver who blocked their getaway exit. Video footage recorded on Fitzroy Street on Thursday morning shows the bungling suspects becoming increasingly frustrated as the lorry stops in the middle of the busy central London road and refuses to move. The brazen group are shown on camera appearing to get their hands on a red scooter parked on the side of the road in broad daylight. Passers-by stop to watch the incident unfold as a lorry drives into the street and parks up in front of the gang, during the attempted theft. The suspects appeared to be flustered by the lorry which refused to move. (Fitzrovia Partnership) One of the men, whose faces were all concealed below helmets, is seen storming around to the front of the huge Brakes lorry and angrily motioning at the driver to get out of the way. Despite the lorry driver refusing to budge, the moped-riders attempt to make off with the scooter but were left empty handed. One witness, who said they watched the incident unfold with a colleague, said: "They used an angle grinder to break the lock on a Red Vespa scooter and they had already broken the chain at the rear. One of the masked moped riders appeared to be carrying a hammer. (Fitzrovia Partnership) "The truck stopped them from stealing it. "They got away with nothing but my colleague, the guy in black with a beard at the end of the video, was threatened with a hammer. But they thought again and panicked and ran off empty handed." The clip was recorded by the Fitzrovia Partnership, a group representing businesses in London. The partnership said they work closely with the police. No one has yet been arrested in connection with the incident. (Fitzrovia Partnership) A spokesman for the Met confirmed they were called at 9.50am on Thursday to an attempted theft of a moped in Fitzroy Street. "One of the suspects made threats to members of the public while another attempted to steal a moped," the spokesman said. "They were prevented from stealing the moped by a passing lorry, which blocked the suspects in. The two suspects made off on a moped, riding westbound on Fitzroy Street." After the video was shared online, many people praised the lorry driver, who was from food wholesaler Brakes, a company which supplies products to the catering industry in the UK and abroad. "Someone please give this truck driver a pay rise for Christmas," one person said on Twitter. "Well done to him." Another person, Graham Hughes, said: "I hope this driver's boss has watched this, well done to the bravery of that driver." There has been a huge surge in moped-enabled crime in London over recent months. More than 8,300 crimes were carried out by thugs using a motorcycle in the capital last year, compared to a drastically lower overall total of 317 in 2011. On Tuesday, restaurant diners stepped in to fight off a moped raider who tried to steal the manager's laptop in a tapas bar in Crouch End.... read more

Remembrance Sunday bomb scare: Viable pipe bomb found near to war memorial in Northern Ireland

Evening Standard logo
A "potentially dangerous" pipe bomb was discovered close to a war memorial in Northern Ireland before a Remembrance Sunday parade took place, police have confirmed. The march was diverted and the traditional wreath-laying at the Co Tyrone town's cenotaph was postponed after the area was sealed off following the discovery of the device in Omagh on Sunday. It comes almost two decades after a dissident republican Real IRA blast killed 29 in the busy market town in 1998. Chief Constable George Hamilton, from the Police Service of Northern Ireland, described it as "a sickening and appalling act". He said: "This small but potentially dangerous device was left to cause the maximum amount of disruption to the Remembrance Sunday commemorations. "This is the action of a small and callous group of violent people who have nothing to offer our communities other than fear and intimidation. Read more Man to apologise to veterans after urinating on Remembrance memorial "Whilst our investigation into the incident is at a very early stage, one strong line of inquiry is that violent dissident republicans are responsible. "Their actions today have demonstrated the disregard and disrespect they have for this community, which has already suffered so much pain and hurt at the hands of terrorists." The 1998 attack was one of the bloodiest killings of a conflict which lasted for 30 years and happened months after the Good Friday Agreement, which largely ended violence.
