'For goodness sake, buy some plates!' Masterchef winner's new restaurant serves food directly onto diners' hands

Evening Standard logo
A Masterchef winner has opened a restaurant where diners are served food on the backs of their hands as the so-called 'no plates' fad reaches a new extreme. Anton Piotrowski, 34, has faced a mixed reaction after ditching plates altogether for the first course at Brown & Bean in Plymouth. Customers who sit down for the nine-course taster menu, the only evening menu on offer, are first treated to a squirt of burnt apple puree and crunchy pork on their hand from a waiter. The small pile of food, topped off with apple blossom, must then be gobbled up without causing too much mess. Local food reviewer Louise Daniel hailed it as a "novel idea" and a "conversation starter". The Plymouth Herald critic added that the food itself tastes "sensational" and, of course, "there are no plates to clear away". Baby girl born with four legs undergoes pioneering surgery to lead normal life

Evening Standard logo
A baby girl born with four legs after her twin died in the womb has undergone a successful operation so she can lead a normal life. Ten-month-old Dominique was flown from her native Ivory Coast to the US for the surgery at Advocate Children's Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. The infant was born with parasitic twin meaning she had four legs and two spines. A team of five surgeons operated on Dominique in a six-hour procedure on March 8. More than 50 doctors and nurses were involved in her recovery and she is now well enough to return to the foster family who have been caring for her in Chicago. Successful operation: Nancy Swabb holds 10-month old Dominique five days after surgery (REUTERS) Foster mother, Nancy Swabb, said she learned about Dominique on social media and wanted to help. The youngster will eventually be reunited with her family in west Africa. She said: "She's been a joy. We really enjoyed having her in our family. Pioneering operation: Hospital staff prepare Dominique for surgery (REUTERS) We send a lot of photos and updates and so we know that Dominique's family sees what she's doing and seeing that she has two new teeth and she's learning to wave and doing all sorts of special things." Paediatric and reconstructive surgeon Frank Vicari said: "It's going rather well. She was only in the hospital a total of five days. She's been home with 'step-mom' and just doing very, very well." John Ruge, a paediatric neurosurgeon at the hospital, said: "A parasitic twin is an identical twin that fails to fully separate in development. In other words, not another independent twin, but a twin that was dependent on her body system, such that Dominique's heart and lungs provided the nourishment." Ms Swabb said Dominique can now sit up, raise her hands and reach for things, which she could not do before.... read more

'Our baby died of rare tumour... More cash is needed to help find cures'

Evening Standard logo
A couple whose baby died from a rare brain tumour today called for more investment to find cures for childhood cancers. Clair and Karim Alleebux's son Lucas died at seven weeks of an atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumour. There was no treatment that could have saved him. Since his death Mrs Alleebux, a civil servant, and her City worker husband have raised more than £60,000 to support Children with Cancer. They would like to see more funding allocated nationally for research. Less than three per cent of UK funding is spent on childhood cancer, says CwC. Mrs Alleebux, 33, said: "Losing a child to cancer is devastating. One of the reasons we are fundraising is to help ensure other parents don't have to go through what we have gone through. One child in 500 will develop some form of cancer by the age of 14. If more is invested then hopefully more can be done to help other children in future." Lucas died on November 9, 2015, in his mother's arms, after he spent his last weeks at home. His parents, from Highgate, had learned about the tumour when their son was three weeks old. After an MRI scan they were told he had a tumour. Lucas was first treated at Whittington Hospital, then Great Ormond Street. Mrs Alleebux said: "We were told nothing could be done to save him so we took him home to care for him. It was so hard because you are taking a baby home to die. We were trying to create memories - taking hand and foot prints. We were so heartbroken." The couple, whose second son Joel is now five months old, started fundraising by asking for donations to CwC instead of flowers for Lucas's funeral. Mrs Alleebux made and sold wreaths and friends took part in a "Bear Grylls survival race". A masquerade ball at Chelsea Town Hall this month raised more than £20,000. Mr Alleebux will run the London Marathon next month. Mrs Alleebux said: "We are doing what we can in Lucas's memory to ensure something positive can come out of something so tragic. We want it to be his legacy." To donate visit Lucas.alleebux.muchloved.com... read more
