Your morning briefing: What you should know for Thursday, August 23

Evening Standard
Fears for pupils over new GCSE grades Headteachers are worried the new GCSE grading system will demolarise students who get low results today. The A-star to G grades have been replaced with a 9 to 1 system, with 9 the highest grade and a 4 being the equivalent of a C. The Association of School and College Leaders fears pupils' achievements will not be properly reflected if they score below a 4. It says pupils should not be disadvantaged because they are the first to take a set of new and more difficult examinations. Trump fires back over hush money claims Donald Trump has accused his former lawyer of lying about hush money paid to two women so he would receive a better deal in court. Michael Cohen has admitted to Presdiential campaign finance violations over the money paid to the women not to talk about claims they slept with Mr Trump. He said the payments were carried out in coordination with Mr Trump but the President has hit back, accusing Cohen of quote "making up stories in order to get a deal". Mr Trump also claimed in an interview on Fox that the payouts were not campaign campaign violations because he reimbursed Cohen from his personal funds. No deal Brexit plans to be unveiled Brexit Secretary Dominc Raab has promised Britain will take unilateral action to keep trade and transport flowing if there is a no-deal Brexit. The Government will publish its first batch of technical notes later today advising businesses and the public about preparing for no-deal. Mr Raab will say in a speech the Government will not risk triggering a tit-for-tat battle with Brussels in the short-term by imposing new border checks or travel restrictions, even if the EU does not reciprocate.
