A new law to make upskirting a criminal offence has been blocked after an objection from Conservative MP Sir Christopher Chope. The Voyerism (Offences) Bill won support from the Ministry of Justice before it was brought before the Commons. But it was derailed at the 11th hour by the objection came from Sir Christopher Chope, a barrister and the MP for Christchurch. Following his objection, MPs could be heard shouting 'shame.' Who is Sir Christopher Chope? The 71-year-old has been an MP for over 25 years and was first elected MP for Christchurch in 1997. He began his political career as leader of Wandsworth Council in 1979 according to his website. During his time there he helped pioneer cost-cutting in local government which ensured that Wandsworth council had the lowest council tax rate in the entire country. Chope was Roads Minister during the governments of Margaret Thatcher and John Major from 1986 to 1992. He also held shadow ministerial posts under William Hague and Michael Howard. The BBC describes him as a Eurosceptic. During the 2009 expenses scandal it was revealed that he had driven a Chesterfield sofa 85 miles to have it upholstered for £881 at taxpayers' expense. When was he awarded his knighthood? In 2017, it was announced that he would be receiving a Knighthood for political and public service. He was handed an OBE in 1982 for services to local government. Previous voting records According to official records, he voted against same-sex marriage and the hunting ban. He also voted against the smoking ban and against laws to promote equality and human rights. In 2009, Chope voted for the national minimum wage to be abolished. He also voted against giving Alan Turing a pardon. In 2013, the Queen later handed Mr Turing a pardon.... read more
